What is concrete made of?
Concrete is a construction material consisting of cement, aggregate materials, water and, in some cases, various admixtures. Aggregate materials can include crushed rock, natural stone, sand and gravel. Cement acts as a binder and holds the materials together.
Concrete is used in many types of construction, including floors, foundations, walls and other structures. The properties of concrete are affected by factors such as the composition and proportions of the materials, as well as how the concrete is mixed, placed and cured.
Concrete has been used in various forms for a long time. The Romans used mixtures based on materials such as lime, water and aggregates in many of their structures. Modern concrete production builds on this principle and today includes different types of cement, aggregates and admixtures adapted to the intended application and desired properties.
Tyrolit offers machines and diamond tools for processing concrete and other floors and surfaces. The range includes floor grinders, floor scarifiers, shot blasters, floor scrapers, dust extractors and diamond tools.
What does VCT mean in concrete?
VCT stands for water-cement ratio and describes the ratio between the amount of water and the amount of cement in concrete. The VCT ratio is an important factor affecting the properties of concrete.
Concrete can be delivered to the construction site and placed using, for example, a concrete pump. After placing, the surface is worked and power trowelled depending on the required surface and properties.
A lower VCT ratio means a lower ratio of water to cement. The properties of concrete are also affected by other factors, such as cement type, aggregate materials, admixtures, curing and placing methods.
When grinding and processing concrete, the composition and properties of the concrete can affect the choice of diamond tools and working method.

Challenges when placing concrete
Placing concrete involves various practical challenges. Weather conditions, temperature, moisture and other conditions on the construction site can affect the placing and subsequent processing of the concrete surface.
For example, rainfall during or after placing can affect the concrete surface and may require additional processing before the surface can be coated or painted.
Tyrolit offers machines and diamond tools for various types of concrete floor and mineral surface processing.
What is polished concrete?
When grinding and polishing concrete, it is important to determine the type of surface and degree of aggregate exposure required.
If full aggregate exposure is required, more material needs to be removed to expose the larger stones. Tools and grinding steps adapted to the specific application are used for this type of processing.
Another type of surface is often referred to as a “salt and pepper” finish. This involves removing the top layer of the concrete to expose smaller stones and aggregate while leaving the larger aggregate particles covered.
If a polished concrete surface without visible aggregate is required, polishing can be carried out on the existing concrete surface. The number of grinding and polishing steps depends, among other things, on the properties of the concrete and the desired final surface.
Tyrolit’s floor grinders and diamond tools can be used to process concrete surfaces for different types of surface finishes. The appropriate machine, tool and working method depend, among other things, on the properties of the substrate and the desired final result.
